Martha Joyal: A Loyal Library Patron Turned 100 Years Young

Martha Joyal at 100 years old

By Betsy Reich (photo of Martha and Board Member, Betsy)

I had a lovely conversation with Martha the other day about books and reading, among other things.

Reading develops our brains and gives us the ability to understand life. There is also grammar and language development. When you read many books, you expand your vocabulary.

Martha primarily read books for pleasure and the love of a good story, but she would read "anything she could get her hands on. " She has difficulty reading now, even with Large Print.

In her younger days, Martha was the Friends most loyal Book Sale attendee. She was our Large Print fan, always waiting at the library front door for our sale to begin.

Happy Birthday, Martha! And many more!

Santa at the Library December 2022

Santa and helper with child.

Despite the weather, Santa visited the Accomac Library to give an age appropriate book to children newborn to 12. We think the weather kept a number of families from coming—in the past couple of years, his visit had been an outdoor event, so many probably thought it was cancelled or postponed. A special "thanks" goes to WESR, who broadcast a current announcement that Santa was on site. We think their message brought in most of the 30 children who came.

In typical Jolly Old Elf fashion, Santa made good use of his time by coloring pictures and going through toy catalogs with a few of his more tentative fans.

Thank you to Carol and Scott Callander for providing the "Santa's Workshop” backdrop to enhance the photos.

Children through age 12 will receive an age-appropriate book from the Jolly Old Elf himself. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture this special moment.

Save the Date: Santa will visit this year on December 2nd from 10 until Noon. It will be his first visit to the Parksley location. He’ll be there Rain or Shine.

Although there have been more delays in the opening of the new library — the interior is close to completion including the Friends Book Shop. These photos were taken a few weeks ago and we are excited to see such progress. The room is now finished (being used for storage by contractors) and we are awaiting delivery of the shelving. None of this would have been possible without your support over the years and the Board wants to extend our thanks to everyone who helped.

All Friends are needed to help with the opening of the new Regional Library in Parksley

Despite the latest delay in the opening of the new library, the Friends are actively planning for it and all the events associated with it. We will need members to help with many of the events and activities. The August Bookworm outlines in detail the events we are planning. There is also a form to print and return to the Accomac Library Circulation desk or you can send an email to friends.es.library@verizon.net and a Board Member will call you.
